The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
The house called Leafield has been demolished leaving only the overgrown ruins of low rubble walls. Outbuildings which remain comprise a two-storey gabled block of rubble walls and slated roof in semi-derelict condition, adjoining a whitened single-storey range with corrugated iron roof.
This house was described in the first survey in 1970 as 'Pre 1831. A semi-derelict building , two storeys high with roughcast walls and slated roof. Outbuildings are ruinous.'
SETTING: The site is in a very rural area, comprising agricultural land.
Historical information
Appeared on OS map of 1831. This was the birthplace of General Sir James Stuart Steele, G.C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., L.L.D. At one time he occupied the second highest appointment in the British Army for a tenure of three years.
