The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A limestone and basalt rubble structure on a rectangular plan with four kiln openings in its south face, each with rough limestone segmental outer arches and blackened brickwork to inner arches. Part of the parapet has disappeared and all is derelict. The kilns stand in a rural location reached by a track off the main road and sited near the coastline.
Historical information
Appears for the first time on OS map of 1857. Built for the burning of white limestone, commonly known as chalk, to reduce it to a rough powder for various uses.
