The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A limestone and basalt rubble structure on a rectangular plan with two kiln openings in its west face, each with two sets of recessed segmental arches. Overgrown on top and used as a dump for cars. It stands in a rural location, visible from the main road but reached by a lane, on a site overlooking Larne Lough.
Historical information
A lime kiln appears on the site on OS map of 1832 but the rectangular walling not until OS map of 1857. Built for the burning of white limestone, commonly known as chalk, to reduce it to a rough powder for various uses.
