Exterior description and setting

Stone (horse) ‘drinking fountain’ / memorial, erected in 1911 to the memory of former local Rector, Rev. Shelton Francis Dudley-Janns, but with all accoutrements of the fountain since removed an a memorial panel put in its place. The whole ensemble is built into a wall at the junction of the Straidkilly Road and The Cloney [Road].

The memorial is in a grey stone [ fieldstone]. To the centre is a pointed arch recess with bevelled and moulded in-out dressings. Within the recess is a raised stone panel with decorative monogram [‘DJ’] above. The panel reads: ‘In memory of Rev. Chancellor Dudley-Janns B.D. R.C., for over 35 years Rector of the parish. Died 13th February 1908’. To the base of the recess is a semicircular plinth which extends onto the footpath (and once held a drinking fountain). The recess is encased within a short stretch of squared rock faced stone walling which rises to small pediment (or gable) with stone coping to it and the outer ends of the wall.

Historical information

This former (horse) drinking fountain was erected in 1911 as part of a memorial to the former (C of I) Rector of Tickmacreevan and Templeoughter parishes, Rev. Shelton Dudley-Janns. The actual memorial plaque was originally sited a short distance away, within the churchyard, but was inserted within this structure when the fountain accoutrements were removed [?c.1960].

Shelton Francis Dudley was born in Roscrea, Co Tipperary in 1844, assuming the additional surname Janns in 1874, in compliance with the will of a kinsman. He was ordained in 1867 and appointed as Rector at Glenarm in the following year. In 1900, in recognition of his services to the diocese, he was made Chancellor of Connor Cathedral. He was also a member of the Diocesan Council and General Synod. It was, however, to commemorate the tireless work carried out on behalf of his Glenarm congregation, and the great esteem in which he was held by locals of all denominations, that shortly after his death in 1908, it was decided to erect the memorial and drinking fountain.
