The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A basalt and limestone structure on a square plan, built into the side of a hill, with a circular charging hole on top, lined with basalt rubble and boulders, and a draw hole at the bottom of the front face set within two orders of segmental arches, one being recessed within the other, both with dressed limestone voussoirs. The charging hole is partly filled up and the draw hole now blocked. Prominently sited on a hill behind a farmhouse, and easily visible from a distance from Largy Road.
Historical information
Precise date of building not known but it appears on the OS map of 1857. Built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, commonly known as chalk, to reduce it to a rough powder for various uses.
