Exterior description and setting

A small harbour of masonry construction; built of basalt rubble and limestone, both roughly squared and rubble, with a later top edge of rough concrete. It is aligned on a north to south axis with the opening at the south end; approach to entrance lined with rocks; concrete slipway located on west side.

SETTING: The harbour stands in a very rural area on a very rocky foreshore with rough grass immediately surrounding it. Fenced off with timber posts and wire. Approached on land by a rough cement screed path leading from the main road to a small slipway; modern tubular steel gate flanked by curved limestone rubble front boundary walls.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it appears on the OS map of 1857; reputedly built by the Marchioness of Londonderry whose summer residence, Garron Tower, stands on the precipice above, and probably dating from the late 1840s to early 1850s when she was carrying out improvements in the area.
