Exterior description and setting

A 2 storey 5 bay wide, detached, late victorian house in a classical style, with 2 storey back return set within a mature garden.

The elevation to Quay Road faces NW, has a central wide 4 panelled single door with plain fanlight, slightly recessed in a pedimented neo-classical surround, with pilasters, frieze and cornice. On each side of pair of shallow segmented arched double hung sliding sash 2 pane windows moulded architraves and moulded corbels under cills. These are repeated on 1st floor with a similar central window over the entrance door. Walls are smooth rendered and painted with plaster plinth and quoin bands. Under the eaves a dentil corbel course with ½ round metal gutter, roof natural slates, hipped and with 2 yellow brick chimney stacks close together on ridge. Stacks with corbel plinth and decorative cap. 4 steps rise to front door.

3 similar windows to front adorn the ground floor of the gables and similar at 1st floor. A wall extends at right angles from NE gable with segmental arched gateway in it. The longish back return is in line with the NE gable.

The ground floor of the back return is 3 steps lower than the main house floor, lower ceiling heights so that the ridge of the return is below the eaves corbelling.

The house is set back from the footwalk of Quay Road where there is a low boundary wall, gate piers but without gates or railings. There is a row of mature trees behind the front boundary wall. The rear garden is not large but is bound by a fine high handmade red brick wall separating it from the adjoining primary school and the equally high rear wall in similar brick but banded with deep courses of rubble basalt. The front wall railings and gates were taken down after the commencement of World War II.

Historical information

The house was built in 1892 for a Captain Hutchinson, military officer who retired to Ballycastle. The external detailing of the house is similar to some other houses in Ballycastle eg. No.s 75, 77 and 79 and 64 Ann Street (see HB05/14/044). These were built by Dallat builder around the end of the 19th cent. Two grand nieces of Dallat live in No.s 75 and 77. He left the properties to them.

The building is indicated on the O.S. Map 1904.

Evaluation

A 2 storey 5 bay wide, detached, late victorian housein a classical style, with 2 storey back return set within a mature garden. A competent example of late 19th cent. middle sized domestic building with good internal woodwork and plasterwork and retaining much of its original fittings. Of local historical interest as the builder, Dallat was a member of a well known Ballycastle family.
