Exterior description and setting

A 4 bay wide 3½ storey terrace house/small hotel. Frontage to North Street from left a former doorway, a built-up window, a 4 panelled door with rectangular fanlight, another entrance with double glazed and framed doors, each opening framed with a wide plaster band with mock keystone. Over the double door a name fascia with the title of the building. At first floor 4 D/H S/S 2 pane windows, 2 of which are separated with a slender pier. At 2nd floor 3 no. similar windows centred over those below. ½ round pvc gutter, no downpipe, shares adjoining one. Roof natural slates with 2 large canted tall dormers typical of lowland Scotland. Each dormer has central D/H S/S 4 pane window and on the canted sides narrower D/H S/S 2 pane windows. There is a large chimney at each end of ridge.

Rear elevation, as viewed from other property at a distance: flat-roofed rear return of 3 storeys; includes one window modern timber fixed light with top-hung vent. Timber fire escape stairway abuts rear wall of front building. Flat-roofed dormer to rear roof of front building.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it appears to be a mid-19th century or later rebuilding of an earlier property. Building shopfront altered and returns added in the late Twentieth Century.

Evaluation

A mid 19th cent. building disfigured by later developments particularly the disorderly arrangement of ground floor and the irregularity of the rear return. The main interest is in the Scottish type of 2 large canted dormer windows and the scale of the building to the streetscape.
