Exterior description and setting

A 4 bay wide, 2 storey building, shopfront, gateway and 3 flats to rear.

Elevation to Ann Street, ground floor, from left : a segmental arch gateway, wide symmetrical shopfront with central recessed doorway, double doors, 2 pane display windows on each side with central mullion, pilaster on each side, with painted decoration, name fascia over with good painted lettering in gold leaf and cornice. Over gateway a blank wall, slated roof with single velux skylight, ridge lower than main roof. Over shopfront 3 no. sliding sash 4 pane windows, continuous corbel course under ½ round metal gutter, single downpipe. Wall smooth rendered, painted, roof natural slates, no chimneystacks. There is good hanging sign at 1st floor over shopfront.

To the rear 2 storey return containing restaurant kitchen on ground floor and 3 flats at 1st floor with access by external galvanised stairway. Rear garden begins at 1st floor, neatly kept with paved terrace for use of flat dwellers. Access to rear is through gateway.

The building observes the terrace building line.

Historical information

Probably a rebuild of the mid or early 19th cent.

4 years ago the building was renovated and flats built.

Evaluation

A 4 bay wide 2 storey early 19th cent. building with interesting roof form and gateway. Building has good shopfront which was erected 1996. The whole fits in well with general character of street but somewhat overpowered by its financial neighbours. It is however, not of special architectural or historic interest.
