Exterior description and setting

A 2 bay wide, 2 storey façade to The Diamond with 7 bays to Market Street.

Elevation to The Diamond, ground floor, shopfront, large single pane display window with pilasters, 4 panelled shop door with fanlight name fascia with painted lettering, cornice, stopped end. At 1st floor 2 no. 2 pane PVC windows, moulded architrave, painted frieze under gutter, ½ round, single downpipe, smooth rendered wall finish, painted, shallow plinth. Window cill of display low and cuts into plinth. Corner of building chamfered with ground floor display window and 2 pane PVC window with architrave over. Name fascia carried round.

Elevation to Market Street, ground floor : from right, gable windowless, at 1st floor 2 no. windows as before. Painted rusticated quoins to left corner. Roof hipped and slated. Return up Market Street, from right ground floor single window as before, entrance with 2 pane fanlight and painted name fascia over, wide display window, 8 panes, moulded plastic architrave, entrance with 4 panel door, glazed 2 pane side screens, each side, 4 pane fanlight, another display window as before. At 1st floor from right and all openings directly over those of ground floor, 2 no. single 2 pane windows with architraves, double light 2 pane, a 4 pane wide window over entrance with gablet over, single 2 pane window as before. Wall smooth rendered, painted, shallow plinth ½ round gutter on timber fascia, no eaves, several downpipes, painted rusticated quoins. Roof slated, no chimneystacks.

Gable of Market Street elevation has single door at ground floor in corner, central 4 pane vertical window at 1st floor. Walls as before with quoins. The building line of structures behind set back depth of gable from footwalk.

A corner building with angle chamfered, observes building line.

Historical information

A building is indicated on this site on O.S. Map 1832. The present building appears to be a rebuild of c 1990s probably observing the original form but openings considerably altered.

Evaluation

A 2 bay wide, 2 storey building recently heavily renovated but retaining its former overall form. Makes a weak contrast with No. 5 The Diamond on the other corner of Market Street.
