Exterior description and setting

A 4 bay wide, 2½ storey building with gated alleyway on upper side.

Elevation to Castle Street, ground floor : An asymmetrical front with central door and fanlight with vertical window to left with 2 unequal panes, upper pane top hung. Large horizontal window to right of door. At 1st floor 4 no. windows, vertical, 2 panes, top unequal pane tophung. Continuous corbel course with ½ round cast iron gutter, single downpipe. Walls rendered smooth, painted, roof natural slates with 2 no. velux type rooflights near ridge. Chimney stack at gable.

The gable of building is windowless, wall smooth rendered and painted. A 3 metre high wall runs back along the alley from the gable. After a short distance the rendering ceases and rubble stonework exposed. The rear of the house is without back return and is 3 bays wide with generally vertical casement windows. There is a central flat roofed dormer lighting stairs to attic. Wall rendered smooth and partly painted.

Historical information

Building probably rebuilt or renovated in early 19th cent. Recently it has been renovated internally and with modern windows externally to front. It lost its original shopfront in 1970s. In 1952 P Dallat, funeral undertaker and decorator owned No. 82.
It was described in the First survey of 1972 as: 'Atwo storey four bay rendered building with pilastered shop front and plain sashed windows'

Evaluation

A renovated mid 18th century building or an early 19th centuryreplacement. It has been renovated and is now of little architectural or historical merit. However it occupys an important site and plays a positive role in the town scape of Ballycastle.
