Exterior description and setting

A 3 bay wide 2½ storey building with shopfront and gateway.

Elevation to Castle Street, ground floor, from left : entrance door to dwelling fanlight, 2 narrow display windows on each side of framed and glazed (6 panes) shop door with side screen to match. Over French style decorative awning with simple name fascia over, painted lettering, plastic projecting sign. Segmental arch gateway. At 1st floor 3 no. vertical windows with single small night vents. Window over gateway at lower level. Roof at 2 levels, that over gateway having lower ridge line and a different roof pitch. Wall roughcast and coloured and beneath name fascia wall finish large tiles. Roofs slated with small chimney stack at change of ridge line. A single velux type window on main roof.

There is a 2 bay long back return, walls wet dash and painted. Projecting at eaves level a flat roofed single storey extension extends and this carrys on to a further flat roofed extension.

Historical information

Building probably early 19th cent and building indiacated on the first ordnance survey sheet. Its first survey slide indicates victorian details to the shopfront and it is likely that in common with much of its neighbours it was renovated during this period. It has been substantially altered since the first survey of October 1972 where it was described as :

' Two bays of a long rendered block with plain sashed windows at first floor, vertical division between. The entrance surround is pilastered. Remainder of block has triple windows and modern display window'.

Evaluation

A narrow frontage house of early 19th century, with segmental arched gateway and a an interesting roof change in the street. Building has been substantially renovated removing much historic material and had a dominating shopfront added which reduces its interest.
