Exterior description and setting

Tall single storey school building in sand cement with natural slate roof in school yard behind stone wall near corner of Irish Green Street and Rathbrady Road. Gable of main block faces east onto Irish Green Street with lower block aligning to south. Lower lean-to porch on junction between the two.

Main gable topped by tall brick chimney has a plain overhanging barge and a large central round headed plaque which rises through much of the facade. It says ‘Termoncanice, school, 1886’. At high level are two small circular ventilators to the roofspace. To the north there is a tall four pane sash window, to the south there is a porch with door on north gable and small four pane sash window overlooking the street. The lower return has a smaller brick chimney on its gable and a twelve pane sash lighting the interior.

To the north there are four tall four pane sashes and a modern lean-to porch.This is glazed to the east and abuts the boundary wall to the north.

To the rear (west) elevation there are two high level circular ventilators, overhanging barge and chimney on top of the gable as to the front of the main block. The lean-to porch wraps around at ground level and meets a modern hall projecting to the rear and south side of the building.On the south elevation this hall extends up one side of the school to meet the return at the front of the building.

Historical information

Built in 1886 as a primary school operated by the Catholic parish. It was used as such until the mid 1970s when the school relocated to bigger premises on Rathbrady Road. The three classrooms were of equal size.

Evaluation

Late Victorian school building simply and robustly detailed. Much interior detail intact. Simple and unassuming design. Of local historical interest.
