Exterior description and setting

Two storey, four windows wide, rendered shop building in a terrace of taller buildings facing north west onto Main Street. Slate roof, no chimney visible to street. Cast iron rainwater goods. Unadorned arch at north east end of facade giving access to rear of site. Four equally spaced Georgian sash windows at first floor all twelve pane with painted stone cills. Shop front under three windows to south west. Simple painted timber sign over ‘J. A. Bradley, domestic lighting and giftware specialist’ Panelled door with rectangular fanlight (plain) under north east end of sign. Single pane window to shop front, with glazed door to one side. 1970s tiles between cill of window and pavement. Simple strapwork wrought iron gates on arch entrance which open into recesses in the side walls.

Underside of arch exposed timber with infill plasterboard. Sand cement render to walls facing alley. Two double pane sash windows at first floor on side wall and one to the room over the arch. Directly ahead a two storey, modern grey brick extension, which fills the site to the D O E car park in the rear.

Historical information

Two buildings are indicated on this site on 1831 map. The present building appears to be indicated on the 1848 map. The 1858 Griffiths valuation records the building as a shop and as a dispensary. (Marcus Dill M.D.). The dispensary is marked on the map to the rear of the arch. Deeds for the building start in the 1890s though this does not preclude construction at an earlier date. The present occupants rented the building in 1969 from W J Lamrock of Coleraine. They bought it in 1974. It was occupied by J Magill as ‘Limavady Bargain Stores’ in the 1960s. The former dispensary to the rear was used as a hairdressers until major renovations in the mid 1980s removed the unit.

Evaluation

Whilst some Victorian period detail remains to the front elevation the interior and rear have been completely altered. Listing can no longer be justified.
