The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Small redbrick slated cottage with gables, slated roof, gable chimneys and small back return. It is three bays long with central main entrance door and small flat roof back return. A central door on the east gable and another from the back return. Windows are a mixture of two light casements and narrow vented windows. Large slates on roof with thin barge boards fixed to exposed purlins, no fascia board with rafters exposed and carrying gutters. Solid brickwork in garden wall bond four stretchers to course of headers and cut brick heads picked out brashly in red paint. Sandstone cills. The cottage is sited on the edge of the avenue leading to Aghanloo House with neatly kept simple garden.
Historical information
Not shown on 1830 map, present on 1848 map. It was built as a porter’s lodge and was a working school for girls, three days in the week, teacher was Jane Johnston, a Presbyterian who was also servant to Mrs Smiley who gave her one guinea per annum additionally. Mr Smiley was rector and the girls were taught housekeeping.
