Exterior description and setting

A former gate lodge to the Bellarena Estate on the north and east side of Seacoast Road. A single storey handmade brick faced building three bays wide on entrance facade with door in centre with window on either side. Each window has 12 panes, sliding sashes with white painted plaster reveals. The side walls are two bays long so that the original portion is not quite square on plan and the hipped roofs finish in a short ridge with a centre chimney. The building has been extended to the rear by another two bays and is slightly narrower than the original. It is built of second hand local bricks which can never be quite cleaned of their original mortar. The roofs are slated with Bangor blue slates and hipped with ridge and hip tiles. The entrance has three circular steps leading up to it, a white painted fascia board, black guttering and downpipes. Doors and windows painted white. The original house had an accentuated eaves overhang which was supported by timber posts. These have not been replaced.

Dean gives the date of building c 1835 and built during the occupancy of the estate by Conolly Gage.

Succesive alterations have rendered the building plain and uninteresting, Also the setting would appear to have been changed considerably.
