Exterior description and setting

Rubble stone humped back bridge on Drumsurn Road near Balteagh Presbyterian Church (HB02/08/006). Semi-circular arch with wide rubble voussoirs. Stone in soldier course detail along parapet which is about 700mm above the carriageway. Second soldier course can be made out much lower down below the apex of the arch suggesting that the bridge may have been rebuilt during it existence. However the bridge is substantially as described in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1835-7.

Historical information

“This bridge divides the townland of Lislane from Drumagosker. Has 1 arch 16 feet wide, breadth from top 18 feet, walls 3 feet high and 14 inches thick length of walls on each side 120 feet, built of slate stone and in excellent repair, situated about 5 perches from the Presbyterian meeting house. All done at the expense of the county. Dated 24 March 1835”.

Evaluation

A substantially existent pre 1830 bridge well constructed and of pleasing low humpback appearance. Western view of bridge slightly marred by crude car park of the church nearby. Of local interest as a historical artefact. A simple but fine bridge worth preserving.
