Exterior description and setting

Smooth rendered storey and a half building on Lower Main Street facing approximately north. Main façade divides into two halves. To the east there is a large shop front opening for a video store. To the west there is a fine fanlit entrance door flanked by sash windows. The building abuts a terrace to the west (HB02/06/006C) with an entry under. It is adjacent to a side street to the east, giving access to the rear of the site.

The fanlit door has been renovated to a high standard. There are two side lights, and a semicircular fanlight divided by the arcs of circular astragals. A plaster architrave around the whole is wider than the cills of the side lights betraying a later construction. Four steps parallel to the street climb to the door, flanked by a simple wrought iron handrail.

The single windows to each side of the door are symmetrically placed. They are four pane sliding sashes with horns. An architrave similar to the door surrounds them. The video shop has modern timber fenestration. There are painted quoin stones at each corner. The roof is of slate with cast iron rainwater goods. There is a painted chimney at the apex of the gable to the side street with a small highlevel window. There is an access hatch at high level in the undercroft of the entry on the other gable.

Access to the rear was not permitted by the occupants. The building appears to have been extended with a shallow pitch felt roof extending from just behind the ridge.

Historical information

Present occupant has been in residence since 1985.They stated that John Young was previous owner. Building appears on the 1830 Ordnance Survey Map. there “always” was a shop in this building according to owners. Originally a grocery and general store.

A simple storey and a half terrace house which makes a pleasing group with a terrace of 4 dwellings at the western entrance to the town of Dungiven.
