Exterior description and setting

Placed at the corner of a triangular field by the side of Glenhead Road. Glenhead Road is a straight section of road joining the junction of Glenhead and Baranailt Roads to the cross roads at Ballydarrog. To both sides of the gate are neat trimed hedges with evenly spaced hedge trees on the south side, probably planted by the Horner family of the nearby house (HB02/03/005).

A pair of circular stone built piers 1.8 metres high 750 dia, whitewashed, 3m approx apart(designed for horse and cart) Flat conical coping. Wrought iron field gate hung between piers, smith made, 6 no horizontal flat iron , 2 square section verticals and 1 in middle with 2no flat diagonals from bottom corners to top centre. Sides to socket in ground, held at top by bent cramps bult into piers and with flat draw iron blolt going into slot in pier.

Historical information

Typical gate piers in area and probably originate from estate policy. Early 19th century. Adds character to this country road.

Evaluation

A good example of vernacular field gate and stone piers, whitewashed with cement rendered capping suitable for the days of horse drawn carts. Late Georgian early 19th century period.
