Exterior description and setting

Storey and a half vernacular house on S side of Clooney Road adjacent to the carriageway. Entrance four steps higher than the road. A modern stone clad platform with railing runs along the length of the facade terminating in concrete steps at each end. The house is four structural bays long. The W bay is a store accessed from the exterior and has a tin lean-to roof. The door is centred approximately on the house. There are two pane side lights but no fanlight. Two windows on each side of the door are timber casements. All the openings on the main facade are trimmed in smooth plaster. The rest of the wall is in a brown pebbledash. Three flat topped dormers project from the roof at eaves level. Each has a six pane sash window and a PVC gutter. Rainwater goods elsewhere are also PVC. The roof is natural slate with three chimneys.

On the side gables, small square windows light the attic rooms.

To the rear is a small farmyard. The building steps out in lean-to extensions towards the western end.

Historical information

Building shown on the Ordnance Survey Sheet of 1830 and was formerly the tenants cottage of the farm opposite. This farm is presently owned by the O’Hara family of Ballykelly. Occupant mentioned an unusual ‘lath’ roof construction commented upon by surveyor before purchase.

Evaluation

A pre 1830 building with dormer windows of an unusual and pleasing design which make the building an interesting variation of the vernacular. Front windows and pebbledash detract from the building which however retains much of its original fittings.
