Exterior description and setting

Two storey three bay house in the Georgian style. Man-made slate roof, painted concrete render with raised plaster quoins at corners, PVC windows to match original sash pattern. PVC rainwater goods.

Main façade faces south at right angles to Culmore Road. Three structural bays wide with bay to west projecting forward as a bow. Triple sash windows formerly in bow now replicated in PVC. Single imitation sash to each bay at ground and first floor. Those at ground level larger with low cills.

Secondary façade faces east towards the road and contains the main entrance door. Two bays wide, with a yellow brick chimney rising centrally from the eaves, the door is in the rear bay to the north. Fine workmanship on the elliptical cobweb fanlight to the door. Below, a largely plain entablature with restrained decoration centrally and also in break front projection over flanking Doric columns. Dentils on upper edge of entablature. Six panelled painted door with brass ironmongery.

To rear north elevation a projecting return and a modernised stable block forming a courtyard with the main house. Windows irregularly positioned.

To the west garden elevation a centrally placed rendered chimney at eaves level a door at ground level and two imitation sashes above. The return projects a structural bay to the west and has four windows.

The building is sited at a level higher than the adjacent road and sheltered from it by a high stone wall. Brick entrance pillars through a pedestrian gate are particularly badly weathered towards the road. The original garden has been divided into two sites and two new houses have recently been erected.

Historical information

Built in late 1880s probably as a residence for a Victorian merchant of the nearby city. Present occupants have lived in the house five years. Previous owner Kevin Heinz was responsible for renovation and development of houses in garden. Deery family occupants in 1970s and early 1980s.

Evaluation

Late 19th century merchants house in the Georgian style. Fine well-executed entrance door but rest of exterior devoid of historical and architectural detail. Cornices to interior of note, other details not of outstanding quality.
