Exterior description and setting

Single-storey rendered and painted store block with gabled parapet detail and return kneeler similar to the other early structures on the base.

Irregularly disposed openings on the approximately 13 structural bay long building. North end single sheeted door. Adjacent six over six timber sash window with painted stone cill and vertical bars. Next six over six sash with horizontal bars in front. Next double doors to ‘mattress stone’ beyond a blocked door/window rendered. Beyond two six over six sashes before a second double door ‘G1098 stores’. Four equally spaced sashes to the corner. All six over six sashes with horns and vertical bars. A water pump mounted on timber is fixed to the wall out of use and painted over. No name. (There is a large water reservoir under the path to the front of the building) Wall is lined out in imitation of ashlar stonework and painted white to match other buildings on base.

South gable. Return sandstone parapet detail. Central boarded up window at first floor. Double doors below with patched cement render around indicating later construction.

To rear west elevation 5 bays of paired six over six sashes behind barns from the north. Three similar windows on a different spacing to the corner.

Roof man-made slate. PVC rainwater goods. Two vents to rear at low level.

North elevation – similar parapet – single window.

Historical information

Building indicated on the 1854 map but not labelled and formed part of the original group of buildings of the base constructed in 1841. It is likely that they were used for the function of stores throughout most of the time the site was used as a military base. . There appear to be few alterations apart from the double doors on the end gable and the manmade slate roof The pump drew water from a tank in front of the building and its continued existence has been confirmed.

Evaluation

Single-storey rendered and painted store block with gabled parapet detail and return kneeler similar to the other early structures on the base. This low and long store block which was part of the original construction of Ebrington Barracks is a relatively unaltered part of the original composition which contributes to the character of the base and its surroundings. However it is not a key part of the main composition and following consultation it has been decided that it idoed not have sufficent architectural and historic interest to merit protection by listing.
