The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Single storey, L-shaped, brick office building aligning east west in style of the other late nineteenth century buildings nearby.
Sandstone coping to west gable, flush return to south to another gable, hipped roof at east. Building is 4 structural bays long. Central southern gabled projection has sandstone copings and kneelers on top of a parapet. The entrance door below is off centre and has an undecorated surround (modern). Two segmental headed six over six timber casements are located at the centre point with bars in front of windows. The building has a natural slate roof. 3 ventilators / roof-lights with man made slate covering on the ridge. Chimney off centre. Painted granite cills, brick plinth course with black brick trim.
West gable: High level roundel with timber ventilator. Two segmental windows below as on front symmetrical on façade.
To rear north elevation, 2 windows as on front about tall chimney on rear wall. To west of this an aligning window with flat head . On closer inspection this is a flush extension.
East end hipped roof with single central 4 over 4 narrow window.
Historical information
Building first indicated on the 1904 Ordnance Survey Map without return with hipped roof to east. It appears to have functioned as part of the married soldiers accommodation along with the school and accommodation blocks near by (wash house?). Extension appears to have been between 1955 and 1977 from an examination of the relevant Ordnance Survey maps. This would agree with a likely date for conversion of the building and adjacent area to accommodate a motor pool.
