Exterior description and setting

Small two storey public house which appears on the 1830 O S map. Slate roof, cast iron guttering. Concrete strap as parapet at gables. Yellow brick chimneys on each gable, smooth render painted white to rest. Three windows on first floor, two grouped to one side over a similar group below. Main double door entrance an obvious alteration from original, flat roofed return to rear more recent than 1970s O S map. Two windows on each gable at first floor level, those on the south east side blocked up. Also on the south east side, a buttressed wall extending approximately the length of building in 19th century O S maps, hides a more recent flatroofed store. The public house is situated on the edge of a tarmaced wasteland once part of a football field and faces the crossroads of Church Brae and Church Road.

Historical information

Said to have been built as a single storey thatched manse building for the Second Presbyterian Church opposite, it was sold in 1860 when the new manse was built at Strathmore house. The thatched building was burnt down on Armistice night 1918 and the present building erected in its place. The buttressed wall may have formed part of the thatched building.
