Exterior description and setting

Two storey public house adjacent to Drumahoe Bridge with a basement level which is exposed along the two sides facing the river. Building has been substantially rebuilt and extended over recent years following a fire which badly damaged the structure in 1985. Two recent porches and an off-licence with new signage face Drumahoe Road. A single storey pitched extension encloses access stairs to the first floor function room. Original window openings remain at first floor onto Drumahoe Road. Pink and white pebble dash render and brown clay tiled roof were applied in the late 1980s. The original slate roof and trusses are said to exist under the new roof which had to be raised above.

To the river side, stables and living accommodation existent until 1985 have been demolished to provide a single storey restaurant extension over the basement with a lower pitched roof and projecting timber bays. There is an area of hard landscaping between the building and river which turns tightly at this point. The river’s edge and the landscaping are in bad condition and subject to regular flooding due to improvements in drainage upstream.

Historical information

Building is shown on 1830 O S map and probably dates to the construction of the bridge approximately seventy years earlier. A stable wing is shown from the 1860 O S map onwards. Stables were existent until 1985 when they were demolished after a fire. The building once formed part of a picturesque group with the nearby bridge(HB01/08/005).
