Exterior description and setting

Two storey, three bay high victorian house with small return to rear, originally giving an L-shaped plan but now altered to a rectangle by a 1960’s extension. No quoins at corners. The main roof is finished in natural slates. Two natural slate roofed canted bays surmounted by Victorian metalwork. Large corbelled brackets equally spaced under the soffit. There are a number of plaster string courses around the building: under the brackets, two thirds of the height of the upper windows, at the cill of these windows and two thirds of the height of the lower windows. Upper windows with expressed keystone and corbelled moulding. Suspended floor.

Stableyard to rear with servants quarters. Main axis of this yard is at right angles to the house. Stable fittings still in existence. Original windows and doors are in good condition in all buildings. Hipped slate roofs and horned sash windows to main house. Mature well kept garden compliments the
setting of the house.

Historical information

Built approximately 1870 by Thompson Builders’ Suppliers of Duke Street Waterside Londonderry as their own residence.They were responsible for construction of the neighbouring Glendermott Manse HB01/08/013 at the same time. The Thompson family lived in the house for 70 years. It was sold to Dr G Fenton an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Altnagelvin Hospital in 1959. The family of the present owners (1997) bought the house in 1969 and installed central heating. The extension of an office and bedroom was built in the time of Dr Fenton.

Evaluation

High-victorian suburban merchants house. Good example of the type and well preserved. The decorative differences when compared with Strathmore next door, reveal the change in taste in the period from 1860 to 1870. Merits recording.
