Exterior description and setting

(The description below was recorded in June 1997 prior to alterations being carried out by the owner.)
Formerly thatched single storey two roomed vernacular house with aligning barns to each side. White washed stone. Two chimneys, corrugated iron roof painted red. Sheeted door also red. One four pane sliding sash window to each side of entrance with stone cill. Building faces north east. Attached barn to south west with same eaves height as house, red corrugated roof one window and one door both sheeted. Barn to north west has lower eaves and is slated. There are two sheeted doors.

Rear of house cut into slope with drainage sheugh. Three windows. No bed outshot, windows of different sizes and levels, all four pane sashes. No openings to barns.

Building and yard surrounded by tall trees. Square white entrance pillars wrought iron gate. Building and surroundings in good condition.

Historical information

Vernacular house , on 1831 map. House and small farm has been occupied by the O’Kane family since at least this period. Recently vacant.

Property changed from original survey of Nov 1997 in 1998/99.

Evaluation

This was a substantially existent pre 1831 building and a good well preserved example of a vernacular type, in a picturesque location.

However its character has been irretrievably lost in a conversion and modernisation scheme carried out by the owner in 1998/1999.
