Exterior description and setting

A two storey house forming part of the block of Lynch’s public house with hipped slate roof, and one tall chimney at the apex of the roof. The main facade faces west. It is an elevation exactly as long as the south elevation (including the pub HB01/01/013A). The external finish is in All in harling render. An entrance door with ogee fanlight exactly as described for Laurel Hill (HB01/01/019) is in the centre. Two standard size 12 pane Georgian sash windows to each side, five smaller 12 pane sashes matching front aligning above.To the north a bay window sits out from the end of the building. There is a small basement below. To the east, the building is joined to Lynch’s pub.

The south elevation is part of the main elevation of Lynch’s pub; it is finished in grey sand cement roughcast. A diamond pane window with Tudor gothic hood moulding similar to the school (HB01/01/012) lights the ground floor with a single twelve pane sash above. This is symmetrical with the window above the bar entrance.

Historical information

Indicated on 1831 map without returns and remarked upon by the Memoirs as ‘ a public house termed an inn.’ The addition of the ‘new room’ to this house making the facade as long as the south elevation bears the unmistakable influence of Beresford, as does the ogee fanlight and Tudor gothic window. It was probably erected shortly after the Ordnance Survey covered this area as its detail is so similar to Laurelhill. The occupant informed us that originally a street passed between the two buildings on the line of the recess in the Pub facade. (Like the Queen’s house at Greenwich ) Could this have been an entrance to the mill? There is no indication of this by the Ordnance Survey. Date: 1762 according to sign on pub.

Evaluation

This with its close association to the delightful village pub next door, together raise the whole character of Park Village. The two facades (west and south) seen approaching on Main Street give the impression of a square adding to its formal architectural character.. The building is also interesting for the connection in style to other structures in the village. Laurelhill (HB01/01/019) the School (HB01/01/012) the Church of Ireland (HB01/01/011), a pub on Altinure Road (not recorded) and thus to the Beresfords. It is a fine piece of architecture. The survival of the interior in Quigley’s house is also of note.
