Synnott writing c. 1680 lists a chapel dedicated to St. Catherine at Butlerstown (Hore 1862, 68; 1921, 59). The location of this church is not known, but it may have been associated with St. Catherine’s Well (WX048-043----), which is just outside the NE edge of the townland in Allenstown Big.
