The National Monuments Service's description

A Stephen Synnott de Bollitrent is recorded in 1538, and at the time of his death in 1630 Patrick Synnott possessed 120 acres at Ballytrent, which his son, Stephen, inherited (Jeffrey 1979, 9). According to the Book of Survey and Distribution (1660s) in 1640 Patrick Synnott held 96 acres at Ballytrent and 39 acres at Ballyrongan (Ballycronigan), but there is no record of a castle (Simington 1953, 306). A house at Ballytrent is represented on the Down Survey barony map (1656-8) of Forth barony, and according to the terrier or commentary of the parish map of Kilrane there was a ‘thatched house and some cabins’ at Ballytrent.
