The National Monuments Service's description
According to an inquisition held in Wexford town on October 9th 1629 Oliver Keating, possessed a watermill and other property at Kilcowan (Jeffrey 1979, 78-9). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) his grandson Oliver Keating owned two watermills and other property at Kilcowan in 1640 (Simington 1953, 163). A grist mill is located in Kilcowan Upper on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map c. 80m N of the moated site (WX046-041----), but it cannot be demonstrated that an earlier mill is located on the site of the 19th century three bay, four storey mill.
