The only upstanding claustral building of the Cistercian abbey is the gateway and adjacent structures in the west range that have been incorporated into the late eighteenth / nineteenth century stable block. Both archways of the gateway are 2.3m wide and the internal dimensions of the passage linking the two, is c. 4.2m x 4.2m. The west façade of the gateway consists of a simple arch of red sandstone with chamfered voussoirs. The wall displays a slight batter and is surmounted by stepped crenellations added by the Colcloughs. The voussoirs of the east façade were replaced in post-Dissolution times but the red sandstone jambs of the arch are intact. The gateway was converted into a coach house by blocking the outermost arch and fitting doors to the inner (eastern) arch. (Lynch 2010, 30-1)
