The National Monuments Service's description

Marked faintly as a rectangular feature (dims c. 30m ENE-WSW; c. 25m NNW-SSE) and described as the site of a castle in gothic lettering on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. References date from 1600 when land at Tullycanna was held by the Neville family (Jeffrey 1979, 89 90), and Walter Neville owned the castle and 180 acres at Tullycanna in 1640 (Simington 1953, 142). It is situated on the E side of the valley of a N-S stream, which is c. 120m to the W. It is visible as a rectangular cropmark enclosure (int. dim. c. 50m) defined by two banks and fosses on aerial photographs (MM (8) 19-23; (48) 28-31), but it is not visible at ground level in a cereal crop. Archaeological testing (20E0098) by D. Shine c. 100m to the NNE failed to produce any related material (Shine 2020 excavations.ie 2020:029).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
