The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on the NE side of a small NW-SE stream, which is c. 30m to the SW. This is the site of the parish church of Clongeen. According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 Robert Dreighan was the curate, and the church and chancel were in repair (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 271). John O'Donovan writing c. 1840 recorded that no trace of the old church was visible (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 354). A multiple cresset stone with at least 5 cups (diam. 12-16cm; D 4-8cm) on three facets of an oblong sandstone piece (dims 0.43m x 0.34m; H 0.22m) is in the raised rectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m E-W; c. 30m N-S) defined by masonry walls. St Edan's Well (WX040-026----) is c. 350m to the NW. Archaeological testing identified features (WX040-097004-) c. 60m to the N, and a burnt mound (WX040-097002-). Other features (WX040-097003-), elements of a field system (WX040-097001-) and a possible mill-race (WX040-097005-) were identified in testing c. 100m to the S, on the other side of the stream.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
