The National Monuments Service's description
Archaeological monitoring (06E0069) of an extensive area (dims. c. 350m N-S; c. 200m E-W at N; c. 350m E-W at S) in Holmestown Great uncovered an area of burnt mound material on a proposed access road in Knockeen townland that was excavated under the same licence, and proved to be two fulachta fia. The N example was better preserved and consisted of a mound of broken and burnt stone (dims 16.5m E-W; 14m N-S; T 0.05-0.15m) which overlay an oval trough (dims 1.75m E-W; 1.35m N-S; D 0.55m) filled with silty clays, suggesting it remained open for a considerable time. There were the bowls of two trees nearby, but two pits were c. 5m to the NE. The pits (dims 1m x 0.8m; D 0.15m; 1.8m N-S; 0.8m E-W; D 0.2-0.3m) contained moderate amounts of burnt stone. No artefacts were recovered. Fulacht fia (WX037-090002-) is c. 17m to the S. (McLoughlin and MacManus 2010, 5-6)
