The National Monuments Service's description
A leper hospital is thought to have been founded by Strongbow in 1176, when mention is made of free Hospitals at Ferns and Wexford (Hore 1900-11, vol. 5, 36-7), but nothing further is recorded of the Ferns hospital if it was ever established. The Wexford house was granted to the Knights Hospitallers in 1212 and had acquired 120 acres by 1385 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 357). At the Dissolution in 1541 the hospital of St. John was attached to the Hospitallers at Kilmainham, Co. Dublin, and its property included two enclosures, an orchard, and the tithes of the parishes of St. John (WX037-032015-) and St. Bridget (WX037-032018-) in Wexford town (White 1943, 103). The hospital was attached to the church of Mary Magdalene (WX037 042001 ), but its precise location is not known. (Hore 1900-11, vol. 5, 83-5)
