Castle - unclassified

The National Monuments Service's description

David Sutton of Oldcourt, probably related to the Suttons of Ballykeeroge (WX039-024001-), was extorted by Art Boy MacArt Kavanagh in 1580 (Hore 1900-1910, vol. 1, 69-70). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) David Sutton owned 120 acres and the castle at Oldcourt (Simington 1953, 184), and 39 people and considerable property is associated with him in the Transplantation documents from the same period (Hore 1900-10, vol. 1, 503). The dwelling marked on the Down Survey map (1655-6) at Oldcourt is probably this castle.
The castle is marked faintly as a rectangular structure (dims. c. 10m NW-SE; c. 5m NE-SW) described as 'site of Castle' on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as the site of a castle on the 1924 ed. It is situated on a shelf on a S-facing slope in a field called the lawn where a slight grass-covered oval hollow (dims. 23m E-W; 16m N-S) is visible. Archaeological testing (03E0479) c. 60m to the NE produced no related material McLoughlin (2006).
