Moated site

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated in a level, low-lying landscape with a small W-E stream c. 200m to the N and a small S-N stream c. 380m to the E. This is a rectangular grass-covered area (dims. 69m NE-SW; 66m NW-SE) defined by earthen banks and hedges (Wth 5-8m; int. H 1.4-2.8m; ext. H 2.8-3.8m) on all sides except the SW, with projecting earthen bastions at the E and W corners (L 13-14m). There is an external moat (Wth of top 6.7-7.5m; Wth of base 1.5-2.5m; ext. D1-2m) on each side but that on the SW (Wth of top 4.5m; int. D 1m; ext. D 0.8m) where the bank has been removed is smaller. There is a causeway across the moat at this side, and there is a recent entrance and causeway on the NE side. It has been tentatively identified as the moated site known as Ballyconnor (Colfer 1996), which was on the manor if Old Ross and is described in detail in the Bigod accounts for 1283-4 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1, 26-34).
