The National Monuments Service's description

Situated in a shallow valley on the NE bank of a NW-SE stream. St. Peter’s Well, where patterns were held on the 29th of June until c. 1810 according to John O’Donovan writing c. 1840 (O’Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 99) is now a small pond created by a small dam in the steam. There is no evidence of veneration. St. Peter was the chief of the Apostles, the vicar of Christ on earth and the first bishop of Rome. When Nero began to persecute the Christians after the burning of Rome in 64 AD Peter was urged by his followers to absent himself. However, Christ met him on the Appian Way and reproached him for his cowardice and he returned to Rome where he met a martyr's death by crucifixion in 65 AD. His feastday is June 29th.
