The National Monuments Service's description
Situated in a valley between low NW-SE spurs on the E-facing foothills of Slieveboy Hill. Land at Monasootagh was granted to Thomas Hibbotts in 1613 and a castle or house of two-and-a-half storeys and a court with outhouses had been built by 1621 (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber 1987, 194). It was in ruins in 1654, by which time it had passed to Lord Mountnorris (Simington 1953, 271). A field is known as the castle field, but there are no visible remains of any structure at ground level.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
