Standing stone

Monument surveyed by ASI in 1976 and described as following; 'The stone has been levelled and now lies in a thicket of thorn trees and briars in the corner of the NNW-SSE field fence (post and wire) shown on the OS 6-inch map. A new roadway (narrow gravelled) has been made just E of this fence and it runs through the site of the standing stone and of an OS trig. station marking 327 ft OD. The stone (L c. 2m) is very difficult to examine because of the overgrowth. It appears to be a large rectilinear sectioned block of granite (?). It is now lying along with other smaller stones in a clump of thorns in a corner of the field fence immediately NW of its position as marked on the 1914 ed. OS 6-inch map. The site was on top of a prominent hill in pasture land. Immediately SW of the stone lie the ruins of a stone strcuture marked 'Lodge' on the 1914 ed. OS 6-inch map’(SMR File 18/09/1976). A second report from 1976 records that the stone measured '2.1m in length, 70cm wide and 80cm thick at base tapering to 45cm in width at top. It has been split in antiquity on one side and the other side is unshapen' (SMR File 28/10/1976).
