Ringfort - rath

Situated on a rise, in undulating pasture overlooking a small valley to E and with good views to the N and S. Ringfort (WM031-088----) lies c. 150m to S. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a D-shaped earthwork with a limekiln in the S quadrant that has been intersected by a public road to W. Monument described in 1977 as a roughly D-shaped area (dims. 40m N-S; 42m E-W) which is partially defined by a fosse, a scarp and a steep natural slope, with the straight side formed by the public road running NW-SE and which cuts the monument across the WSW sector. The monument is defined by a shallow fosse visible from NW-N-ENE, by a steep natural slope from ENE-E-ESE and by a scarp from ESE-S-SSW. There is a low bank outside the fosse from NW-N-NE, but this may be part of an old field fence. There is no indication of an original entrance. The interior has a slight N-facing slope and there are no visible features. A small quarry is located just inside the roadside fence at W. Monument is visible today as a subcircular-shaped tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.
