The National Monuments Service's description

Unlocated rabbit warren within the townland of Monksland which is mentioned in a land grant dating from 1619. In this year the Crown granted John Trestian lands in the town of Athlone including 'Monksland, 2 qrtrs, except the rabbit-warren and the wood and underwood there; all in Athlone' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 422).
