Ringfort - rath

Situated on NNW-facing slope, on a gentle rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 39m) enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank with the remains of an external fosse. A gap (Wth at top 4.3m; basal Wth 2.5m) and a slight causeway (Wth at top 1.7m; overall Wth 4.4m; approx. H 0.2m) at NE represents the entrance. The SE side of the gap has evidence of stone facing. The bank has modern disturbance gaps at SE, S, SW and WNW and the exterior is much denuded by livestock. There are slight fragments of internal stone facing visible from WNW-NW-NNW. Some stones set in a line in the middle of the bank at E which may be later than the original construction of the bank. The fosse is wide and shallow from N-E-S-SSW and becomes very narrow from SSW-W-WNW. A modern-looking fosse filled with stone is visible from WNW-NW-N. The interior has a general NNW-facing slope. There is a mound (max. L 5m; max. Wth 2m; H 1.5m) of earth piled against the bank at SSE and a large prostrate stone inside the bank at S. A small sub-rectangular-shaped house site (WM025-137001-) is located in the W quadrant. A slight bank (L 13.5m) of earth and stone runs WSW-ENE from the SW corner to the ringfort bank at WSW.
