Castle - tower house

Situated in low-lying pasture, with reasonable views to W, N and E, although overlooked by gently rising ground to S. Monument described in 1978 as the remains of a rectangular-shaped building (approx. dims. 18m E-W x 9m N-S) defined by the remains of walls to N, E and S. The S wall (approx. H 7m) is the best preserved and parts of those to E and S survive as lower walls, although the NE and SE corners are levelled. The W wall has been completely levelled and its approx. line is marked by rubble fragments. There is a substantial internal wall running N-S roughly 4m from the E wall. The springing of a vaulted roof over the second storey is traceable on the E side of the internal wall. There is no trace of vaulting in the W side. There are no quoin stones or cut stones of any sort visible. There are large mounds of rubble and a scatter of loose stones outside the walls on all sides. There is a line of rubble running roughly N-S approx. 7m to W of the castle ruin, which is more likely to be a bawn wall rather than the original position of the levelled W wall. Toward the N end of this line of rubble and approx. 20m from the castle are the remains of an old well shaft, now almost completely backfilled with stones. Several vernacular stone buildings lie c. 90m to SW of the castle ruin.
