The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on Hare Island at the S end of Lough Ree. Precise location of this souterrain on the island has not been identified. Possible souterrain described in 1804 as a ‘cave made by art, which Mr. Nowlan [Silversmith in Athlone] had inspected; it consisted of several chambers thrifty feet [10m] by six [1.8m] and high enough for a person to walk upright in; he had been in three of them, and discovered there were more, but the earth had fallen in, and prevented further research'(Vallancey 1804, 257).
