The National Monuments Service's description

The precise location of the medieval castle of Clonlost has not been identified. The ruins of Clonlost House may have been built on the site of the medieval castle which was located to the S of the medieval chapel (WM020-038----) of Clonlost which was also the family burial place of the Nugent family (WM020-038003-). An inquisition into the estate of the deceased Christopher Nugent of Clonlost taken at Mullingar on 15 December, 1617 recorded that his estate consisted of one castle, six messuages and 120 acres of land in Clonlost (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., 14 Jas I).
