Ringfort - rath

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on a slight rise, in gently rough, wet undulating and hilly pasture, with limited views of the surrounding landscape. Earthwork (WM018-087----) and ringfort (WM018-088----) lie c. 150m to NNE and c. 195m to NE, respectively. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped enclosure. Monument described in 1970 and 1977 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 36m) enclosed by a substantial bank, an intervening fosse and a couterscarp. The inner bank is of earth and stone and has well-preserved internal stone facing. It has several slight disturbance gaps. The intervening fosse is shallow but fairly wide, particularly at NNW and SSE. The remains of an earthen counterscarp are visible from SE-S and from W-NW-NNW. A gap (Wth at top 6.4m; basal Wth 2.9m) at NE possibly marks the entrance. A rectangular-shaped house site (WM018-086001-) is located within the centre of the interior, where there are also traces of pits and hollows which may be the result of modern quarrying. To the N of the house site, there are traces of a stone-built internal division attached to the inner face of the bank. Monument is visible as a circular-shaped tree-lined enclosure on Digital Globe aerial photography.
