The National Monuments Service's description

Situated in undulating pasture, to E of a quarry, c. 300m SW of Shinglis House. Enclosure (WM017-084----), ringfort (WM017-085----) and the site of a 17th century military camp (WM017-086----) lie 325m to SE. A castle is depicted in 'Shingles' on the 1657 Down Survey map of Rathconrath Barony (NLI MS 723-4). The ruins of a tower house type structure standing on the lands of James Dillon, Earl of Roscommon are depicted on the Down Survey map of Ballymore parish (ibid.). The terrier of the parish map recorded that, ‘Upon Shingles standes a Castle’ (NLI MS 723-4). Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a range of buildings annotated ‘Shinglis Court in ruins’.
Described in 1983 as site of Shinglis Court now occupied by some outbuildings which form part of the farmyard of the nearby Shinglis House. No surface remains visible of a castle at this location. Only a single ruinous building of 'Shinglis Court' is visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography.
