Mound

Situated on wet marshy grassland. A pointed oval shaped area (approx. diam. 30m NE-SW; 40m NW-SE) enclosed by two low earthen banks with an intervening fosse. The outer bank is very slight. Much of the interior is occupied by a natural circular shaped mound with a saucer-shaped depression on the top, probably the result of quarrying. The top of the natural mound may been used as a settlement in the crannóg tradition. The area around it is saturated with water at time of inspection. It looks as if this area was a lake at one time and that the mound formed a little island. In 1837 the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books recorded that the townland of Calliaghstown 'contains an ancient mound' (OSNB No. 3, 7). This earthwork may ne the remains of the ancient mound referred to the field name books. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch map.
